Point Loma
/Are you thinking about purchasing a home in Point Loma, or are you currently looking at different communities in the coastal San Diego area? In that case, you will find there is certainly a lot to do in this bustling and breathtaking part of town bursting with rich history preserved for modern-day adventures! Whether you’re looking for some of the best views in the county, or are getting relocated to Naval Base Point Loma- there are dozens of reasons to visit the area!
When looking for a property, there’s a lot that needs to be considered - from the number of bedrooms you need to the local schools, etc. However, you also want to make sure that there is plenty of fun and exciting things to do in your community as well! After all, no one should be bored living in a place steeped in such rich history and stunning panoramic ocean views.
With that being said, let’s take a look at all of the fun and exciting things to do in the Point Loma area:
Cabrillo National Monument
Immersed in colorful history, Cabrillo National Monument is a landmark waiting to be explored, full of cultural and natural resources. The Old Point Loma Lighthouse is the main draw to everyone who visits Cabrillo, but there’s so much more to discover once you’re walking the wildflower-dotted pathways. The lantern room currently houses the third-order lens from the Mile Rocks Lighthouse and can be toured as well as parts of the old living quarters within the lighthouse.
Besides learning about local history, one of the most majestic things to do at Cabrillo National Monument is whale watching. Every winter, after spending the summer months in the Arctic, Pacific Gray Whales swim south and pass Point Loma and Cabrillo National Monument’s western overlooks. Their peak migration is mid-January, but Gray whales are visible from December through to March. If you’re in the area that part of the year, head to the Cabrillo National Monument so that you can witness their magical annual journey.
Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery
Located on the picturesque Point Loma peninsula, Fort Rosecrans National Cemetery is a registered California Historical Landmark. It overlooks San Diego Bay and the city on one side and the sweeping Pacific Ocean on another. With over 113,000 internments from members of all United States armed forces branches, its over 77 acres of revered and distinguished grounds are respectfully maintained by the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. Several historical landmarks can be found within the Fort, including a bronze plaque of President Lincoln’s Gettysburg Address. You can see this renowned and cherished San Diego landmark daily from sunrise to sunset and pay your respects while taking in the phenomenal views.
Liberty Station
Described as a place that “offers a portal to the past, an experience for the present, and a promise for the future,” Liberty Station (formerly the Naval Training Center, San Diego) is a vibrant and refreshing experience. With events, venues, different restaurants, San Diego’s famous Stone Brewery World Bistro and Gardens, and an amazing shopping scene, this historic area is always vibrant and thriving- Pigment is one of my favorite local boutiques. You also have the First Friday at the Arts District, which gives you a great chance to experience something genuinely new and creative. So whether you want to treat yourself to a few new items or you want to enjoy a delicious meal with friends, Liberty Station does not disappoint!
Sunset Cliffs Natural Park
Word has it the most beautiful sunsets in San Diego can be found here. The amount of photographers on the trail can attest. Running 1½ miles along the western shoreline of the Point Loma peninsula, these steep cliffs weave their way along the stunning southern California coastline. Staying at the top and strolling the length of Sunset Cliffs while admiring the view is a perfect way to spend your afternoon. If you feel like doing a bit of exploring, its protected beaches have fascinating tide pools and impressive cave and cliff formations. As soon as you approach, you’ll know why this is the destination for many weddings, multi million dollar homes, hiking, etc. If you have the chance to grab some food and head to the cliffs, highly recommend!
Dusty Rhodes Dog Park
We can’t forget about your best friend! An excellent place for the whole family to have fun together, this huge off-leash dog park is fully fenced and even has plenty of doggie water fountains for playing on those sunny San Diego days, and dogs of all ages and sizes are welcome. You can find this pup-loving park between Nimitz and Sunset Cliffs Boulevard in the heart of Point Loma.
Point Loma has so much to offer
As you can see, there is a lot to love about the Point Loma area. If you are looking for somewhere fun and exciting, you won’t be disappointed with this serene part of San Diego. With a median sales price for a single-family detached home around the $1,515,000.00 price point, it’s certainly not a budget-friendly option. But if good schools, lots of activities, safety, and rich history are top of your wishlist, this is the place! From the beautiful scenery to the fantastic attractions in the area, there is always something to keep you and the family busy.
